Our son emigrated to Australia twelve-ish years ago. He comes home for visits, usually at Christmas, and, to our shame, we have only twice found time to reciprocate. Australia is a wildly enchanting and breath-taking place and finding Australians there who emulate their bluff reputation amongst Britts is a tough job. At home they are almost universally friendly and polite – maybe they just don’t travel so well. Snarling Australian fast bowlers and cultural attaché Sir Les Patterson have, in my opinion a lot to answer for.
