Local heroes. Most every town and city has one. The life and times of Mark Addy are well documented (around here at least!) and perhaps embellished somewhat, but at its core, his story is one of courage and selfless sacrifice. Manchester and Salford both claim him as their own. In truth, during his life he spent time living on both sides of the River Irwell where he rescued scores of folk from a watery grave. Today, save a derelict pub which bears his name on the side of the river about one hundred metres from where he was born, there are few memorials to him. Perhaps if he’d been a rich slave trader…? The song’s title comes from a quote attributed to him. The story goes that whilst dressed in his best new suit he dived into the Irwell to save a pregnant woman and when an onlooker remarked afterwards that he had ruined his suit he answered, “What of that? There was a life in the job at stake.”
