OK – maybe it was a mistake! Starting an album off with an instrumental track wasn’t perhaps the wisest thing to do judging by the number of people enquiring as to ‘where the lyrics went?’ To directly answer the question – the honest answer is – ‘into the bin’. This tune had been orbiting my brain; coming back around like a bad penny for a couple of years but I could never capture lyrics to match the mood. In the end, with nothing better to do during lockdown I decided to record it as an instrumental piece to exorcize the ghost. The title comes from ‘vesper flights’ which are twice daily phenomena whereby large bodies of swifts (sometimes referred to as ‘drifts’ of swifts) fly up and up to the heavens to sleep on the wing. Does that have any bearing on the inspiration for the tune? I honestly have no idea.
